Here in Coastal Dental, as with many modern practices around Australia, advancements in modern technology have been reflected in many of our trusted techniques. Far from the comparatively clumsy dental reconstructions of only a few decades ago, we are now aided by a number of computer-based programs that have revolutionised modern dentistry. One of the finest examples of this reality is Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics, or CEREC.
This system operates within the field of dental restorations. It employs a CAD/CAM program, similar to that employed in many forms of engineering. This has changed the way that we approach our creation and fitting of inlays, onlays, crowns, and veneers.
Now, dental ceramics are created on-site – without the use of a lab and lab technicians. It has dramatically lessened the number of visits necessary for many procedures to be completed, as the prosthetic or crown can be created almost immediately. Suddenly, a dental prosthetic that once took several visits – and required added procedures to cover a painful gap in a tooth – have been reduced to only one.
CEREC has been around since the early 1980’s, but it has undergone a number of transitions over the course of years. Advanced milling machines and adhesives have improved the user experience and shortened the curing time, while the Bluecam, utilising short-wave blue light, has replaced the previous 3D camera, improving it’s degree of precision. Furthermore, subtle similarities between all teeth have been studied, and this knowledge has streamlined the creation of the ceramics.
