Each week, Mansion Global tackles a topic with an elite group of designers from around the world who work on luxury properties. This week, we look at how to incorporate the Pantone colors of the year.
Each December, the Pantone Color Institute, a color trend-forecasting and consulting company based in Carlstadt, New Jersey, selects its Color of The Year—as it has since 2000. As we turn the page on 2020, this annual tradition brings an inspired twist for 2021 with not one, but two chosen hues: Ultimate Gray, reflective of weathered pebbles found on the beach, is described by Pantone as “emblematic of solid and dependable elements which are everlasting and provide a firm foundation”; while Illuminating, a bright and cheerful yellow, is “sparkling with vivacity, a warming yellow shade imbued with solar power.”
Of the clever combination, Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute said in a statement, “The union of an enduring Ultimate Gray with the vibrant yellow Illuminating expresses a message of positivity supported by fortitude. Practical and rock solid but at the same time warming and optimistic, this is a color combination that gives us resilience and hope. We need to feel encouraged and uplifted; this is essential to the human spirit.”
We turned to the design pros for their ideas on using these two hues throughout the home. Prepare for major inspiration ahead.
Create Poppy Accents
“Light gray is always a great alternative to white for those who are looking to create a soft, tranquil environment. It has a soothing effect and is a great backdrop that works with most aesthetic directions. A punchy yellow is energizing and eye catching and is best when applied graphically through art and styling, like a great modern print or throw pillows with colorful patterning. Pillow accents add extra dimension to a space.
“The brilliance of a light gray is that it works in almost all applications and room functions. Much like white, it is timeless and won’t go out of style. You can switch out furniture, textiles, accessories and art to completely refresh a room without having to repaint. A bright yellow should be used minimally and as an accent, as it can be too powerful and overwhelming in large swaths.
“Gray is universal. It pairs seamlessly with every color in the rainbow and will look balanced. Yellow is a bit trickier and needs a quieter neutral or an earthy hue like rust or aubergine.”
