Dallas, Texas, October 8, 2018: It has been 10 years since Dr. P. Craig Hobar performed his first surgery on Li Ying, a young girl with a unique craniofacial cleft. Since that time, he has successfully helped give her a new lease on life.
Li Ying was born in a Chinese village with a rare and quite serious craniofacial cleft. This cleft was unlike any Dr. Hobar had seen as the cleft affected not just her lip and nose but also impacted her eye socket and extended into her brain cavity. This condition was keeping Ying from living a normal life. In fact, she was even refused enrollment in school because officials feared the other students would be frightened.
Dr. Hobar knew he needed to step in. Through LEAP Global Missions, Dr. Hobar’s non-profit organization, he brought Li Ying and her mother to Texas for the start of this life changing endeavor.
Over the course of a decade and numerous surgeries, Dr. Hobar has gone above and beyond to ensure Li Ying received only the best medical treatment. In addition to handling her care, Dr. Hobar and his wife opened their home to the young girl and her mother while she underwent her orthodontic therapy. For her last surgery, Li Ying lived with the Hobars for over a year and attended McCallum Public High School absorbing a great educational and cultural experience. She became fluent in English and returned to China where she is attending university in Beijing as a marketing major. Several families from Dallas and Austin are supporting her education, and she is excelling in school in her sophomore year.
Li Ying is now living a normal teenager’s life with the ability to breathe, speak, smile and go to school! She has been helped surgically through a special division of LEAP Global Missions – the Landmark Program that was started by the Lamon family and has helped dozens of children around the world. Overall, LEAP has provided over 9,000 free surgeries to people across the globe.
