Feldman Disability Law has conducted research on gender and race disparities as it relates to Social Security benefits. The findings show that across the board, women and minorities receive fewer benefits, whether they are retirement, disability or survivors’ benefits. For example, from 1975 to 2016, the data shows women were declined more than 50 percent of the time for supplemental security income, and most of these women were mothers.
Their research shows this is, in fact, a trickle-down effect. Wages for women and minorities are lower throughout the years so when it’s time to receive benefits, the payout is also lower. Calculations for benefits are based on wages earned and pay-in to the Social Security program.
Financial challenges are exacerbated when low wage earners cannot contribute to 401k plans and put additional money aside for retirement, an unexpected disability occurs, or a spouse passes away.
