Due to a recent, and way overdue change in federal law, The Drug and Alcohol Detox Clinic of South Mississippi is pleased to announce an expansion of their program, which enables them to now treat a greater number of patients for Opiate Use Disorder (Opiate Addiction). The reason such a change was possible is that their director, Dr. Kevin Passer, is Board Certified in Addiction Medicine by both The American Board of Addiction Medicine, as well as the American Society of Addiction Medicine. Up until last year, each physician could only have a maximum of 100 patients at a time, in treatment with the medication buprenorphine (Suboxone). Only those physician who are Board Certified Addictionologists, like Dr. Passer, are able to now have a total of 275 patients being treated at any given time with the buprenorphine medication.

“The increase in our maximum numbers makes a huge difference,” according to Dr. Passer, who added: “Before the increase, we would at times have to turn patients away, because we were at the maximum number of 100 patients. Now with the new law, we are happily able to accept many more patients into our treatment program.” Dr. Passer is very convinced that having an increased number of folks in treatment will inevitably save more lives.

Opiate overdoses continue to be on the rise. Opiates drugs include: Oxycodone (Percocet, Oxycontin, Roxycodone; Hydrocodone (Lortabs, Vicodin, Norco; Opana, Morphine, Codeine, and even Heroin. These drugs can be very addictive and once dependent on opiates, a person needs to keep taking them or else go into what are known as opiate withdrawal symptoms. Taking too much opiates can cause one to quit breathing, resulting in death.

The primary goal of treatment with buprenorphine for Opiate Use Disorder is to avoid deadly overdoses. Outpatient based, replacement medication assisted therapy, using the medication buprenorphine absolutely saves lives. In fact, no one has ever died from an overdose of buprenorphine (especially if not mixed with other drugs). On the other hand, in 2014, sadly, over 34,000 of our fellow Americans died from opiate overdoses.
