The holiday season is a joyous time. We are surrounded by family and friends, and taking a few days to relax, away from the stresses of the workplace, constitutes a well-earned break.
It is also a time that we often will let our diet slip somewhat. There is a noted increase in the number of cavities that can be traced back to this stretch of time, as our diets are supercharged by a huge variety of sweets that we might have an easier time avoiding during other periods of the season.
Lollies abound, and not just for the kids – it is not uncommon to be tempted on an hourly basis. So how best can we avoid coming out of this period with a few new cavities in our one and only set of pearly whites? Your friends at Marketfair Dental Care have a few tips for the holiday season.
We won’t bother telling you to avoid these sweets, but instead, suggest methods of remediating their impact. First, dilute the impact of all of this sugar by swishing water around your mouth after you imbibe. This encourages the flow of saliva, which in turn, helps to remove the acids in your mouth, and improves the PH levels.
Secondly, despite the festive atmosphere, it is doubly important not to slack on your oral care regime. Ensure that you are brushing your teeth twice daily, with a proper, soft-bristle toothbrush. Don’t overbrush, either – this does considerably more harm than good – and don’t brush within an hour of your sugary treat, as your enamel is actually in a weakened state.
Finally, scheduling in a checkup with your friendly local dentist early in the new year can be key to heading off any potential trouble spots.
