The health issues associated with smoking have long been established. Heavy smokers are faced with a litany of health problems through their lives, including increased risk of stroke, emphysema, heart issues, and lung cancer. Quitting smoking can drastically improve your overall health, but one area that receives less press than the others is your dental health.
Typically, when we think of the teeth of a heavy smoker, we think of stained, yellow teeth. Smoke from cigarettes can easily discolour a set of teeth, but this is only the most obvious sign. Smokers also experience greater tartar and plaque buildup on their teeth, and often, their breath is worse. This is related to smokers having less saliva in their mouths, which operates as a natural ‘wash’ for your teeth, and helps to keep them clean.
The gums of a smoker suffer considerably, as well. Gum recession is quite common among smokers, something which hurts your teeth’s aesthetic appeal, as well as creates issues with tooth retention down the road.
As an added downside, the mouth of a smoker is less receptive to corrective treatments. Mouths heal more slowly, if at all, something that is related to a decrease in blood flow in the gum tissues of the smoker.
At Wagga Family Dental, we are in the business of creating happy smiles throughout our region, and living a healthy lifestyle helps immensely. There are many benefits to quitting smoking, and like the rest of your body, your mouth and teeth will thank you for putting the pack aside.
