There’s a silent crisis happening on the side of our roads—and it’s taking the lives of the very people out there trying to help others. Tow operators, first responders, and roadside workers are being struck and killed at an alarming rate. These aren’t just statistics—they’re real people, real families, and real heartbreak.

I’ve had the honor of interviewing Cindy Iodice, founder of Flagman, Inc., and her story is one that every driver needs to hear.

Cindy’s brother, Corey Iodice, was a seasoned tow operator with decades of experience. In 2020, he was tragically struck and killed while assisting a motorist on the side of the road. “He was doing everything right,” Cindy shared. “He had his lights on, his gear on… and someone just didn’t slow down. They didn’t move over.”

Out of that devastating loss, Flagman, Inc. was born. Cindy turned her grief into action, launching a nonprofit dedicated to promoting Slow Down Move Over (SDMO) awareness across the country.

What Flagman is doing is more than just advocacy—they’re building a movement. “Our mission is to reduce struck-by-vehicle fatalities and injuries through education,” Cindy said. “We’re targeting students in K-12, partnering with schools, and bringing this message directly into the community.”

And it’s working. Flagman’s initiatives are already being integrated into school programs, they’re running public awareness campaigns, and they’ve built meaningful partnerships with public safety officials and government agencies. Their iconic cartoon mascot—Flagman—makes the message approachable for young audiences, while driving home the seriousness for adults.

Let me be clear: SDMO laws exist in all 50 states, but awareness and enforcement are still lacking. Too many drivers either don’t know the law or don’t take it seriously until it’s too late. That has to change.

As Cindy so powerfully stated: “People need to understand that these roadside workers are someone’s family. They have lives, dreams, and futures that deserve protection.”

    Here’s how you can help:

    • Educate yourself and others about Slow Down Move Over laws.
    • Share resources from organizations like Flagman, Inc. on your social channels.
    • Support the cause by donating to Flagman or inviting them to speak in your local schools or community groups.
    • And most importantly—slow down and move over every single time you see flashing lights or roadside activity.

The fight for roadside safety is personal, and it’s urgent. As towers, we face these dangers daily. But with your help—and with the tireless work of leaders like Cindy—I believe we can create a safer road for everyone.
